It's also worth mentioning that a large sampling of these games appeared on the PS2 and PSP in the SEGA Genesis Collection, although that sampling only had 28 Genesis titles and five unlockable arcade games. The transition lost stuff such as Shadow Dancer and Virtua Fighter 2 (which sucked) but gained stuff such as the Streets of Rage trilogy and Shining Force. Seems like a good deal to me.

Tzar: The Burden of the Crown is a solid but derivative real-time strategy game. It looks decent, sounds mostly acceptable, and plays fairly well, but it suffers from a few specific problems - most notably its own lack of originality.

Tzar takes place in the Dark Ages, circa 500-1000 A.D., though it also incorporates elements of fantasy, such as magic spells and fire-breathing dragons. The game lets you play as one of three medieval civilizations: Asian, Arabian, and European. During the course of the game, each of these may develop differently, but as in many other real-time strategy games, they must all begin the game in the exact same way: They must all gather resources, build structures, and amass an army to defeat the enemy.

Tzar - Burden of the Crown PC Game

Tzar has a handful of distinctive features. The first and most obvious of these is its four-part late-game technology tree. Though most missions require you to begin by harvesting resources with your peasants to build an economy then move on to create a basic military, you may also choose from four special guild structures: the warriors' guild, the mage tower, the religious center, and the trade center. Each structure may supplement your kingdom with advanced military (in the form of interesting special units or magical powers) or with economic support (in the form of enhanced economic and trade options). Each of these structures is restrictively expensive, so much so that you won't be able to afford to build even one until you've gathered thousands of resources for your cause. As such, you must choose wisely. Though you may find that certain civilizations' options are more powerful than others, for the most part, these guilds - and the civilizations themselves - are fairly well balanced. And in addition to the guild structures, Tzar also includes magical artifacts that increase a unit's abilities or let it learn a magic spell.

Tzar: The Burden of the Crown is a real-time strategy game in which you must recover the rightful leadership of Keanor. A sinister evil has come to the peaceful kingdom of Keanor, a land of beauty, mystery and magic. The Palace lies in ruins as armies of malevolent warriors sweep through the countryside while the once-proud Imperial Guard cowers in fear. The citizens of Keanor flee their homes in terror, praying for the rise of the one true leader who, it was foretold, would lead them against the armies of darkness. Are you the hero they seek? Tzar puts you at the heart of the battle of good versus evil.

The forces of humanity are on the brink of annihilation, and it's up to Naava and Jonas Teramun, a recently awakened Kohan with no memories, to unite the races of the land.

Kohan II : Kings Of War

The storyline is a little unoriginal for a fantasy setting, but it is enjoyable nonetheless, thanks to a few well-placed plot twists. The last mission is also quite fun and suitably climactic, although the game's ending is rather dull and disappointing. The single-player campaign spans 25 missions and should take anywhere from 15 hours to twice that long to complete, depending on your strategies and if you complete optional secondary objectives. At any rate, like its predecessor, the campaign in Kohan II is too scripted and suffers from weak artificial intelligence. Also, it'll be an absolute breeze for experienced RTS players at the default difficulty, and even hard difficulty won't be much of a challenge for the first half of the game. The missions are varied, though, and you'll get to play as each of the game's races at various parts in the campaign. You may or may not enjoy this aspect, because even though this lends some variety to the gameplay, you don't really get attached to any particular characters or their causes.

Kohan II features six playable races: human, haroun, drauga, gauri, undead, and shadow. Each race has its own unique units, buildings, and economic factors, such as reliances on particular types of resources over other types. These economic twists turn out to be what most differentiates the races from each other, because the respective military units are basically functional equivalents despite their aesthetic differences. Each race can also belong to a particular faction. There are five factions total (although not every race can choose from all of the factions) and each of these confers certain benefits. For example, the council faction reduces the cost of buildings by 10 percent. These factions allow you to further tailor the game to your play style, although the factions mainly come into play in skirmish or multiplayer matches since you can't choose your faction in the campaign. Overall, though the game's races and factions don't have a ton of personality to them, the various combinations can make for significant and interesting gameplay differences.

Worms 4: Mayhem is the third Worms game in two years, which is a lot of worms. But more importantly, it's hard to believe there's such a rampant demand for these games, considering they really never change or improve over time. Aside from the requisite transition to 3D, the Worms series hasn't changed much since it first appeared on the PC in 1995. Each new installment may tweak the weapon lineup ever so slightly, but these worms tend to stick to their guns. That's both a good and a bad thing for Worms 4: Mayhem. On one hand, you can expect to be chucking holy hand grenades, detonating old ladies, and calling in air strikes in the hopes of destroying the opposing team of little pink worms. On the other hand, if you've done all that before, there's really no reason to play this game, because it doesn't offer anything new and worthwhile.

The stages take place in medieval times, the Old West, prehistoric times, and the modern day, and each era has its own set of worms that behave pretty similarly, except for the worms have different hats and voices. The missions in story mode are fairly creative and represent a nice change of pace from the simple kill-everything mentality the series is known for. Some missions have you blowing up certain parts of the environment, and others have you defending the professor for a set amount of time. Unfortunately, the missions never become difficult, and many of them are rather brief. The artificial intelligence here is inconsistent, making boneheaded decisions one turn and blasting you with deadly precision the next. The computer-controlled enemies always favor the same few weapons as well, which makes for some dull and uneven single-player missions.

The only difficulty in the single-player missions comes from navigating some of the platforming sections. The worms in the game aren't really nimble creatures, but you'll often have to hop between small platforms suspended above water, which any Worms veteran knows spells certain death. You can use the jetpack or ninja rope, but the awkward control usually makes using those tools more hassle than it's worth. These types of missions are challenging, sure, but they're frustrating and aren't much fun. Really, we just want to blow stuff up.

Based on the life of Philip, father of Alexander the Great, Hegemony: Philip of Macedon is an impressive indie strategy game. The whole game is one huge mission, split up into smaller missions of course, in which Philip has to rid Greece of its invaders and go on to unite the whole nation, ready for his son's future of conquering the world.The story is told with narration and static graphics, beautifully created and cleverly creating a 3D effect by having multiple 2D layers. The history is fascinating; I've read a lot about Alexander the Great, but practically nothing about his father. It seems that military genius ran through the family...

The controls are mostly good, but a couple of things I found rather awkward and I would definitely advise using keys to scroll the map as it's very jerky if using the mouse. I thought some of the controls could have been easier to use, but on the plus side they are very versatile. Aesthetically the game is very good, with moody music and speech (in the narrated parts), good SFX, and very nice graphics.
